Everything you ever wanted to know about cataracts… but were too afraid to ask

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is caused by protein build-up on the lens in the eye which causes the usually clear lens to go cloudy, making it harder for light to pass through, thereby causing loss of vision.

A cataract can be caused by things such as trauma, certain medications, or we can even be born with them.  However, by far the most common cause of cataract is age - as we get older our lens gradually becomes more and more cloudy.

What are the symptoms of a Cataract?

·       Generally reduced vision - this can be blurry, hazy, or foggy vision

·       Colours look dimmer and/or duller

·       Myopic shift: some patients can become more short-sighted, which can improve their near vision. However, this doesn’t last.

·       Glare sensitivity due to light scattering as it passes through the cataract

·       Decreased night vision

What is the best treatment for cataracts?

An Ophthalmologist (eye doctor) trained in cataract surgery will remove your cataract and replace your old cloudy lens with a new, clear lens. It is a relatively simple eye surgery that usually takes around 15-40 minutes to complete. You will be in and out in the same day and will be given eye drops afterwards to manage the healing process.

What is a secondary cataract?

A secondary cataract, also called Posterior Capsular Opacification (PCO) is a formation of cells on the back of the capsule where the lens sits. This can occur months to years after cataract surgery and will cause a gradual reduction in vision.

What is the best treatment for a secondary cataract?

Secondary cataracts (PCO) are treated by a YAG laser procedure. This is done in the clinic, is painless, and normally only takes a few minutes. Improvement in vision is almost instantaneous.
